Seedley chippy, Salford

It was a slow and painful decline. The chippy on Southern Street in Salford used to be busy. But as the surrounding streets emptied, owners Jenny and Pete Smith stopped opening evenings and weekends and waited to be moved. And waited. And waited. By 2007 they stood alone on a boarded-up street, and then most of the nearby properties were bulldozed to make way for a new school. Builders and demolition crews became their best customers. Finally in July 2009 – 15 year since the regeneration of their area was first announed – the Smiths were handed the keys to a new shop around the corner on Liverpool Street, and their old premises were flattened. Business is finally starting to pick back up.
